European trade unions Vs. Colombian trade union
We can star this analysis by saying that Colombia is a third world country and that Europe is a first world continent, therefore this compression could be out of context in a certain way.
The trade unions in Europe, are concentrated or gathered in the ETUC which is the European Trade Union Confederation, and that Colombia has many trade unions.
The European trade union confederation was set up in 1973 to represent the trade unions in the European institution. Taking into account the economical integration of the European countries this process of representation is even more difficult and complex. The main objective of the ETUC is “to ensure an European Union with strong social dimensions that safeguards the wellbeing of all its citizens”
The ETUC has a total of 60 million members from 36 European countries. Moreover, this confederation supports the Social Development Agency which seeks to extend international social dialogue, carry out specific projects on social issues and facilitate the exchange of knowledge and experience, and to advise European Works Councils and workers’ representatives in European Companies.
Now, if we analyze the trade unions in Colombia, we can see that there is not such a strong and organized institution that represents the different trade unions in the country. On the other hand, we can see that these trade unions, sometimes act looking for “personal benefit” and don’t care about the overall social dimensions. Some decisions they have taken have affected many times the national population.
We can say in conclusion, that even though the trade unions are the same in theory, and that they are created to defend the workers interests, sometimes according of the context they exist, the trade unions can be more useful, or they can even sometimes affect some other workers.
