DID YOU KNOW...

Uro & Arawaks. Latin America

The Uro Ethnic group.
This ethnic is located in the floating island of Lake Titicaca. The traditional name of the group is Kotsuña which means “lake’s people”. This group has three subdivisions that are: Uru-Chipayas, Uru-Muratos and the Uru-Iruitos.
There are some theories about this group. Some people say that they come from Polynesia and that they first inhabited the coast and then went to the highest places. Some other people say that they are descended from the first inhabitants of the Americas. But the reality is that this group comes from the “Amazonía” and is descended from the Arawac group.
The Arawak is a group of indigenous could be found in Bahamas, the Antilles, in central and south America until the south of Brazil.
Nowadays, there are Arawak groups in Colombia, and the majority of the population of Aruba, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, and part of Haitian population are descended from Arawaks. Latin America has its roots in Arawacs and we still have some alive groups like this Uro group, or the “Aruhacos” from Colombia. Moreover there are some isoleted communities in Venezuela, Brazil and Guyana.
The Uro group is one of the most famous Arawak group because of the lake. This place is one of the main attractions when visiting Peru. (or Bolivia) There are about 20 floating islands on the lake and the number of inhabitants varies depending on the families. Sometimes it goes from three to ten. The Uros are in constant contact with foreign cultures that visit the lake; however they still conserve their customs and their culture. This is a good example of preserving a historic culture. This group receives tourists all the time and they still preserve their culture, or a Latin American culture, since this group is not original from Peru.

Trade unions

European trade unions Vs. Colombian trade union
We can star this analysis by saying that Colombia is a third world country and that Europe is a first world continent, therefore this compression could be out of context in a certain way.
The trade unions in Europe, are concentrated or gathered in the ETUC which is the European Trade Union Confederation, and that Colombia has many trade unions.
The European trade union confederation was set up in 1973 to represent the trade unions in the European institution. Taking into account the economical integration of the European countries this process of representation is even more difficult and complex. The main objective of the ETUC is “to ensure an European Union with strong social dimensions that safeguards the wellbeing of all its citizens”
The ETUC has a total of 60 million members from 36 European countries. Moreover, this confederation supports the Social Development Agency which seeks to extend international social dialogue, carry out specific projects on social issues and facilitate the exchange of knowledge and experience, and to advise European Works Councils and workers’ representatives in European Companies.
Now, if we analyze the trade unions in Colombia, we can see that there is not such a strong and organized institution that represents the different trade unions in the country. On the other hand, we can see that these trade unions, sometimes act looking for “personal benefit” and don’t care about the overall social dimensions. Some decisions they have taken have affected many times the national population.
We can say in conclusion, that even though the trade unions are the same in theory, and that they are created to defend the workers interests, sometimes according of the context they exist, the trade unions can be more useful, or they can even sometimes affect some other workers.

Some "Feedback"

This, is the kind of feedback for the O&C course..
First of all, I would like to say, that the topics of the course are interesting as well as the readings, however I think that the readings are sometimes too long. At the same time, the presentations activity is good, but I think that it would be better if more interactive and different activities are incorporated to the course.
On the other hand, I appreciate the rapid response of the teacher and the interest she showed with the investigations and the doubts the students had.

The Stolen Generations and the National Sorry Day...

First, I’m going to define what the “stolen generations”. This is a term to describe those children that were taken away from their aboriginal families by the Australian federal state, church missions and some government agencies; this occurred in the period between 1869 and 1969.In the following chart we can find out why were Aboriginal girls taken, and we can find that the main reason was to send them to service.

These children were not always sent to service, an sometimes they were raised by non aboriginal parents that used to punish them severely when they were caught talking the aboriginal language. These children were removed from their families and every link or bond between them and the aboriginals was broken.
In the removal process, girls and boys were separated in different institutions and this has even been compared with the German concentration camps.
The most important institutions were:
· Bomaderry Children's Home (United Aborigines Mission) which operated from 24 May 1908 to 1981.
· Cootamundra Aboriginal Girls' Home which operated from 1911 to 1969.
· Kinchela Aboriginal Boys' Home (Kinchela Training Institution) which moved to Kempsey in 1924. About 600 Aboriginal boys passed through Kinchela before it was closed in 1970.
· Mittagong Boys' Home
· Kempsey
· Parramatta Girls' Home which operated from 1887 until 1986
· Kahlin Compound, Darwin
· The Bungalow, Alice Springs
· Box Hill Boys Home, Melbourne
When it comes to estimate the number of children removed from their families, the work gets tough. However, the number is estimated in more than 6200 between 1883 and 1969, however this is a number very dificult to estimate due to the conditions of that time.

Some of the effects of this removal were (or even ARE)
· Loneliness.
· Low self esteem and feelings of worthlessness.
· Loss of identity:
· Mistrusting everyone.
· Difficulties to find their religious beliefs,
· Internal guilt because Stolen Generation members often blame their mothers and fathers for not loving and caring for them, based on incorrect or sparse information supplied by foster parents and government institutions
· Anguish of searching for their identity.
· Depression and other mental illnesses.
· Difficulties parenting or filling any communal role.
· Unable to manage relationships because they have never had a role model to learn from.
· Transgenerational traumas: Parents pass their traumas on to their children.
· Loss of cultural affiliation
Loss of language
Now that we know a little bit more about the “stolen generations”, let’s see what the “national sorry day” is…
This is an event held each 26 may since 1998 to express the regret of the mistreatment of aboriginal people, and it is the day when the country Sais “I’m sorry” because of what happened with the stolen generations.
Is this enough?
I personally think it is very important that the government accepted its responsibility and that it is aware of the mistreats and the negative consequences, However, we already saw the impact this had was severe as well as the consequences for those children that were taken away, or for those aboriginal groups. I think that the government should create institutions in order to treat these people and to help them heal some of those consequences, such as the loss of identity, depression, the loss of cultural affiliation, and the low self esteem. The sorry day is important to recognize publicly that this was a wrong behavior however, this event doesn’t help those who are suffering to recover those things they lost or those feelings they have. This event doesn’t help them heal the injuries or recover the tenets or the customs they lost.
It is needed to create institutions for this aim, and to develop programs with the community to help them accept those who have no identity and integrate them into the social life. I think that it is needed to work with the aboriginals groups in Australia in order to help them preserv their customs and avoid what happened with other groups. The government should develop preventive campaigns with the aboriginals as well as make even more efforts to protect them, since the past governments didn’t.

E-commerce and Muslim world.

The honest and truthful businessmen will be in paradise
amongst the prophets, the truthful, and the mytyrs’’.

As we know, Muslims base their life and their behavior in the Quran, but would you think that Muslims base their business on the Quran as well?
The Quran has faced another issue in nowadays world; it has to deal with electronic commerce and the world of IT. The total isolation of countries is not possible in a globalized world, and Muslim countries have to deal with this situation.
E-commerce is not a new concept, Islamic religious are not totally familiarized with this concept or the way business are carried out through this mean, however, the Quran seems to be familiar with it. Muslims also found a justification in the Quran for this issue… if the transaction fulfills two basic prerequisites it is a legal transaction and Muslims can undertake this concept of commerce. These prerequisites are:
Permissibility: Which means that the good or service must be permissible by the Islamic Law (Syariah)
Harmlessness: this means that the good or service can’t be harmful for the parties or for the public in general.
And taking into account that transactions used to be carried out face-to-face, there are certain norms that have to be carefully fallowed in order to ensure the legality of the transactions; these norms are first of all, clear definitions , enough information about not only the product but the payments and post sales services, transparency between the parties.
According with the aforementioned, and the principles of the Islamic religion (Truthfulness, sincerity and honesty) we could expect a totally transparent transaction when doing business, nonetheless, based on personal experience I can say that this is not always true, and that we can find those who cheat and try as much as they can to gain a profit, even if it means lie about a product.

Human beings need to believe in a creator, and need to be told what to do. This is the human nature. Muslims are recognized around the world because they are adoring fans of their religion and their sacred book, we generalize saying that “Muslims obey and act based on their religious precepts’ BUT we can find exceptions, and (no offense) we can’t expect to have the most transparent and honest transaction just because the counterparty is a Muslim.

Nevertheless, there are certain some advices given by Islam to ensure the legality of the e-commerce, and if we know these rules, it would be easier to identify if we are doing business with a Honest Muslim or a Muslim that has not fear when it comes to cheating. These rules are:
The initiation of the contract the bid and acceptance of the transaction, being as clear and specific as possible
Confirming the validity: In this stage gambling is avoided, no pressures, the clear demonstration of interest and avoid the uncertainty.
Implementation: this is a proof stage, where we prove that the owner of the product is one selling it and that the product has any liability.
Binding: Both parties sign a contract, but before doing so, both parties have to confirm the information they have about each other.
Delivery: in this stage the delivery and the payment take place, however there is a very important issue to consider; Muslims try to avoid as much as they can credit cards because it involves an interest rate, and it is forbidding in the Islamism.
In conclusion we could say that, first Not every Muslim will avoid cheating when doing business, there is always an exception of the rule, however if we take into account how the right way of doing business is, we could avoid an non successful transaction. Knowledge is the base of success.

SALESPERSON IN COLOMBIA

According to the four aspects of leadership behavior, I think that salespersons in Colombia are committed with the organization they work in. I think this aspect is part of our culture, we are nationalists, regionalists and we feel committed with those things part of, and I think that it is very often to see how salespersons compete and defend their companies; nevertheless this commitment is high related with the wage… When we analyze the continuance of commitment we can see that salesperson tend to change the company when they have a better work proposition a higher position in other company and better salaries.
If we analyze the second aspect, i think that sometimes it is very difficult for managers to define roles or tasks, and we can identify this when we go “somewhere” and ask for “something” and this person doesn’t have information about it, he/she is not allowed to do it, or he first has to ask for authorization. It is very common to find and even say “nobody knows anything in here” and I think that this is because the managers don’t define the roles since the beginning effectively.
In the third aspect, I identify a very particular situation, and it is that even though sometimes there is no role clarity and the salesperson has no authority to do certain things, we can see that they adopt certain level of authority in front of the client just to make him believe that he/she has everything under control, and I think that it has something to do with the fact that salesperson are persistent and are willing to win at any cost.
In the fourth aspect, the individualism is very notorious among Colombian salespersons and the fact that it is very difficult to recognize a leader and to follow him, just because salesperson and Colombians in general are very ambitious and prefer to carry out things how they think, they think they are right and that it is a competition. In the power distance I find two different cases. First, the case when people wants to receive orders because “they don’t want to think” or when they need a responsible if anything goes wrong, and we have the case when people doesn’t want to listen what he/she has to do, or what has to be done, just because they think they are right.

Japan, Colombia and Korea!

First of all we are going to analyze the research “What makes management style similar and distinct across borders? Growth experience and culture in Korean and Japanese firms.”

The methods used in this research were:

-Empirical investigation
-Questionnaires
-Data collection via emails
-Interviews

The findings were:
Justificar a ambos lados
-Group harmony is an important principle of management in both countries
-Korean managers don't emphasize in loyalty and consensus as much as Japanese managers.
-Koreans are more individualist than Japanese
-Since Korea is more "family management oriented", Korean management never achieve a degree of "groupism"
-Koreans tend to emphasize on profit maximization more than Japanese
-Japanese are more active in environmental analysis than Koreans
-Economies of scale are more important for Korean managers than for Japanese managers
-Japanese tend to emphasize in customer relations and information exchange more than Koreans
-Japanese tend to emphasize more than Koreans in brand and trademark development

Now, we are going to talk about the Management Style in Korea, Colombia and Japan, therefore we are going to compare the elements of a management style, based on JanghoLee, Thomas Roehl and SoonkyoChoe. (2000)

The Alligator river story...

"The Alligator River Story

There lived a woman named Abigail who was in love with a man named Gregory. Gregory lived on the shore of a river. Abigail lived on the opposite shore of the same river. The river that separated the two lovers was teeming with dangerous alligators. Abigail wanted to cross the river to be with Gregory. Unfortunately, the bridge had been washed out by a heavy flood the previous week. So she went to ask Sinbad, a riverboat captain, to take her across. He said he would be glad to if she would consent to go to bed with him prior to the voyage. She promptly refused and went to a friend named Ivan to explain her plight. Ivan did not want to get involved at all in the situation. Abigail felt her only alternative was to accept Sinbad’s terms. Sinbad fulfilled his promise to Abigail and delivered her into the arms of Gregory. When Abigail told Gregory about her amorous escapade in order to cross the river, Gregory cast her aside with disdain. Heartsick and rejected, Abigail turned to Slug with her tale of woe. Slug, feeling compassion for Abigail, sought out Gregory and beat him brutally. Abigail was overjoyed at the sight of Gregory getting his due. As the sun set on the horizon, people heard Abigail laughing at Gregory."

THE EXERCISE: After reading the story, rank the five (5) characters in the story beginning with the one whom you consider as the “most offensive” and end with the one whom you consider the “least objectionable.”

You can leave your comments about this little activity that helps us (among other things) to understand we all think in different ways and we have different perceptions of life, as well as different valid arguments....

The responsibility in the corporation

  • Should individuals (directors, employees, shareholders) bear any responsibility for the actions of a corporation? If so, to what degree?

This week i would like to answer this question. It seems a very simple question, although from the legal perspective it is not.
Personally, I think that individuals should bear some responsibilities for the actions of the corporation, if it is proved that those actions were carried out based on studies that supported the possible results. However I think that the responsibility of the individuals has to be determined by the law. For example in Colombia, the responsibility of the business partners in the “ltd” companies is regulated by the code of commerce in the article 353, and it says that the responsibility will be limited according with the capital contributions, however, this can be changed and one or more people can have more responsibility.
This is very important because it stablishes a limit, and I think it is very coherent.
According to the law and the code article 373, the aforementioned it is applied to the “S.A” societies.
Nevertheless, the theory and the practice are different. It is said that the responsibility will be limited according to the contributions in the “ltd co.” but the business partners have to assume any responsibility if there is no money in the company. I don’t agree with this, I think it is an accommodation of the law to benefit the subordinates or the other companies that are being affected by the actions of the corporations.
In Colombia, we used to have 6 different types of societies: Sociedad limitada, Sociedad Anonima, Empresa unipersonal, sociedad en comandita simple, sociedad en comandita por acciones y sociedad colectiva. The responsibilities were regulated in the code of commerce, and i think that if there were not such modifications in the responsibility of the “sociedad anónima y ltda” the law would work perfectly to determine how individuals should respond for the actions of the corporations.
In 2008, a new society was created: S.A.S (sociedad por acciones simplificada). Personally, I think that this society should have a reform, because it says that the partners have any responsibility. I think that people without morals and ethics in business could use this society as a shield to act in a bad way without assuming any responsibility, which is totally wrong. (It is needed to clarify that the shareholder does have responsibility when participates in fraud)
The managers and the CEO's are the head of the company, are those who decide what to do and what not to do, are those that decide the course of action of the company, therefore I think that they should be responsible for some of the results (positive or negative results). Why not all the results? Because I think that in big corporations the decisions are taken by many people, and many mistakes can appear without bad intentions, therefore it wouldn’t be fair to make them be totally responsible.

EVEN RELIGION HAS TO DO WITH THIS ISSUE....

And now... let's talk about corporate culture and national identity..

According to the Business Dictionary, corporate culture is:...

"Pervasive, deep, largely subconscious, and tacit code that gives the 'feel' of an organization and determines what is considered right or wrong, important or unimportant, workable or unworkable in it, and how it responds to the unexpected crises, jolts, and sudden change. All new employees must assimilate this code ('learn the ropes') to know the correct way to behave and what to expect from other employees. Organizational culture is the sum total of an organization's past and current assumptions, experiences, philosophy, and values that hold it together, and are expressed in its self-image, inner workings, interactions with the outside world, and future expectations. It is based on shared attitudes, beliefs, customs, express or implied contracts, and written and unwritten rules that the organization develops over time and that have worked well enough to be considered valid. It manifests in:
  • The ways the organization conducts its business, treats its employees, customers, and the wider community

  • The extent to which autonomy and freedom is allowed in decision making, developing new ideas, and personal expression

  • How power and information flow through its hierarchy

  • The strength of employee commitment towards collective objectives.

Business dictionary. (n.d.). Retrieved 02 09, 2010, from http://www.businessdictionary.com/definition/corporate-culture.html

On the other hand, National identity could be defined in simple words as "the depiction of a country as a whole, encompassing its culture, traditions, language, and politics".

Wikipedia Free encyclopedia. (s.f.). Recuperado el 11 de 02 de 2010, de http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nation

Now, in my personal oppinion, i think that the corporate culture has it roots in the national culture and there fore in the national identity. the people will behave in the organizacion according to what they are used to, what they believe and how they were raised in their homes. The values they have and the moral that guide people is closely related with the national identity or vice versa.

According with the aforementioned, the corporate culture would be very difficult to be changed. I think that if a CEO wants to change the corporate culture, first he/she has to analyze and understand the national identity and the national culture to see why his/her subordinates acts in certain ways. moreover, the CEO has to make subtle changes, he/she can't forget that this change in the corporate culture will "attack" in a certain way how people usually think and how they daily behave.

The age, the world the subordinates have lived in, as well as the age and the world around the top managers, the personal experiences, the national history, and many facts could modify or affect the behavior inside the organization and modify subtly the corporate culture.

The corporate culture would be just a different aspects of our lives, a different invironment inside a country, a nation.. a state.. therefore its culture can't be considered or planned or set too different from the hometown culture.

Definitions of Culture....

Damen, L. (1987). Culture Learning: The Fifth Dimension on the Language Classroom. Reading, MA: Addison-Wesley.

"Culture: learned and shared human patterns or models for living; day- to-day living patterns. these patterns and models pervade all aspects of human social interaction. Culture is mankind's primary adaptive mechanism" (p. 367).

Kroeber, A.L., & Kluckhohn, C. (1952). Culture: A critical review of concepts and definitions. Harvard University Peabody Museum of American Archeology and Ethnology Papers 47.

" Culture consists of patterns, explicit and implicit, of and for behavior acquired and transmitted by symbols, constituting the distinctive achievements of human groups, including their embodiments in artifacts; the essential core of culture consists of traditional (i.e. historically derived and selected) ideas and especially their attached values; culture systems may, on the one hand, be considered as products of action, and on the other as conditioning elements of further action."

Banks, J.A., Banks, & McGee, C. A. (1989). Multicultural education. Needham Heights, MA: Allyn & Bacon.

"Most social scientists today view culture as consisting primarily of the symbolic, ideational, and intangible aspects of human societies. The essence of a culture is not its artifacts, tools, or other tangible cultural elements but how the members of the group interpret, use, and perceive them. It is the values, symbols, interpretations, and perspectives that distinguish one people from another in modernized societies; it is not material objects and other tangible aspects of human societies. People within a culture usually interpret the meaning of symbols, artifacts, and behaviors in the same or in similar ways."

An interesting link.

In this link, we can find a very complete definition of what culture is, as well as some specific issues related with culture such as some "theories" and the "layers of culture". I think it is very usefull if we want to understand and differentiate culture from other different terms and expand our knowledge in terms of culture, so we can have more arguments and more intelligent words when we want to talk about it or even define it

I hope you like it!
